The short video project titled OFFSET will include separate video treatments for each contributor including JORDAN SANCHEZ, AL PARTANEN, NIAL FREDERICKSON, JOSH MURPHY and JOSEPH LOPEZ. The COMUNE crew along with Contributors Jason Lee Parry, Gareth Stehr and Braydon Szafranski recently took a nine day journey from Southern California through Arizona and New Mexico ending up at the live music capital of the world…Austin, Texas to experience the legendary music festival, SXSW. Upon arrival, Austin turned out to be an open pallet of endless music, talent and adventure that included hang time with The Black Angels, Dirty Beaches and U.S. Girls. Over 2500 miles later, this was an excursion that left everyone exhausted, broke and nursing a hangover for days. However all would agree it was well worth the good times and memories that remain. The guys down at Active Ride Shop have some cool brand profiles on their YouTube page one of which is COMUNE’S. It’s a cool short behind the scenes tour of the COMUNE head office in Costa Mesa, California around the time of their Tent City launch earlier this Summer.

COMUNE opened its doors on Saturday, April 24th to over 500 guests for the official launch of Drop City. “Experiments in Occultism and Parapsychology” was the title and theme of the show with artists: Corey Smith, Gareth Stehr, Jason Lee Parry, Jimmy Fontaine, Clifford Lidell, Nathan and Noah Rice, Danielle DeFoe, Shelby Menzel, Kealan Shilling, Ray Gordon, Noel Sinclair Boyt, Liz Davis and Hunter Longe all of whom exhibited their newest work coinciding with the dark and ominous theme. The artist’s work included video installations, sculpture, photography, and paintings. For the event COMUNE constructed a massive maze gallery extending off its existing steal shipping container show space. As viewers wandered their way through the maze they experienced an overwhelming visual impact. The visceral glow of several video installations reflected off everyone’s bodies and the energy pyramid centered in the entrance of the compound set the tone for the rest of the show. Gareth Stehr’s black light room was a highlight creating a psychedelic/mock black magic vibe that only he can explain. Dj’s blasted the finest stoner rock along with 60’s and 70’s obscure psych/garage favorites. PBR flowed like water and Gringo and the Bean fed the packed house.

COMUNE’s “Black Holes and Invisible Forces Bending Time Through Particle Deformation Creating Infinite Freedom in the Garden On The Moon” is part of a ongoing, collaborative avant-garde snowboarding film that highlights multiple video edits featuring COMUNE snow team, aggregates and associates. Contributing artists towards the project include: Corey Smith, Liz Davis, Jason Lee Parry, Andrew Kuykendall, Ryan Scardigli, Hunter Longe, Kevin Castanheira and Shelby Menzel. The film is part of COMUNE’s ongoing DROP CITY creative platform, which launched last month. Inspired by the early 1960’s artist commune in Colorado and the brainchild of COMUNE’s Art Director, Corey Smith, DROP CITY was introduced to attract like-minded contributors to the COMUNE artist community.

Saturday, April 24 was the Spring 2010 Drop City art show at COMUNE head quarters in Costa Mesa. Catered by Gringo and the Bean (the sweetest meat, Carne Asada quesadilla’s served amongst other authentic Mexican staples) , the gathering was well stocked with Tecate, PBR and vodka drinks. Lots to go around to the roughly 500 expected guests. Dreamed up by Corey, Mike and the rest of the creative camp then seamlessly executed by Julie, Billy and the marketing team, COMUNE curated a cult classic night. Check out some of the set up here but if there is any way possible be sure to find you way down to the next event put on by COMUNE. Its one to be a part of first hand!

April is COMUNE month at Underworld Vancouver. The newest Underworld location now has COMUNE’s Spring 10 Collection on the floor and custom display in the main window thanks to Adrian Mcinnes (Proper Design), Tory Potoroka (Wick Winder) Sean Miller (Feedback Management). COMUNE snowboarder Billy Mackey is the epitome of a minimalist. Last
week he showed up at my house from Colorado with nothing but the clothes
on his back, a board bag containing one woman’s snowboard, a pair of
snowboard boots with the tongue cut out that could double as hi-tops in
their lack of ankle support, and a Snuggie. When it was time to hit the sack
he wouldn’t sleep on my couch and just curled up on the hard wood floor
with his clothes on and wrapped up in his Snuggie. He definitely takes the
title of dirtiest guy on COMUNE and at the airport his nickname is “random
bag check”. Billy doesn’t care about much, and he doesn’t need much to
get by. As long as he’s snowboarding that’s all he needs.

CS: How’s your trip to SoCal been so far? How’s Bear Mtn. been treating you?

BM: Its pretty nice here, first day I got a ‘’So Cal’’ tan so it was a big hit at
big bear, Bear was real fun goin fast and it was sunny and slushy. I’m flyin
home tonight out of LAX, guess the weather is kinda shitty in Denver so
bummed on that.

CS: Do you prefer a “woman’s” board to a regular board? Do you feel sexier
when you ride it?

BM: Haha! Well, I guess it makes me feel a little sexier. But no I don’t prefer
woman’s boards but they are a lot easier to throw around, when it comes to
goin fast and getting air you gotta have man legs, no bitch legs allowed.

CS: What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get back to Colorado?

BM: Well go to this burrito place BURRITO EXPRESS, one of the best fast f
ood style Mexican places, then go snowboarding.

CS: Where would your dream vacation be and what would you do?

BM: Shit well my dream vacation would be anywhere outside the good
ol U.S.A never been outside this place. I wanna go to Japan, see Tokyo
drift in real life.

CS: What are your plans for this summer?

BM: There is a chance I might be goin back out to Mt. Hood, tryin to decide
if I wanna hang out with a bunch of ‘’snow-bros’’ other than that gonna skate
a bunch work on my bike and look at El Camino’s.

CS: Thanks man. Hope you can make it back out to CA soon.

BM: Just let me know when. Thanks a lot corey! Good hangin out.
